TI Flats or DR Sunbeams on a 68 Jazz?

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a set of TI Flats installed on a ‘68 Fender Jazz, but I'm not quite sold on them yet. They sound "good", but I'm not sure if they need to break-in a little more, maybe I need to adjust my playing to them, but I sort of have a love-hate relationship with those strings so far.... I’ve had them installed for about 2 months, and have played on them maybe 20 hours total.

The reason I like them is the feel, and the tone, and the fact that they sound different than my other Jazz loaded with DR Fatbeams.

The reason I don’t like them is that they don’t seem snappy enough when I dig-in (I’m using SS on other basses), and the volume seems way high on the G string (I’ve adjusted-lowered the pickup as much as I can)

I’m wondering if I’d be a little happier with a set of Nickel DR sunbeams on this baby.

The reason I’d like to stick with lower tension strings, is because this particular neck seams more susceptible to string tensions changes, and I don’t want to constantly mess with the truss rod (old bass, best if not messed with too much)

What should I do? Keep the TI, or go with the Sunbeams?

I guess I should read a little about those. I've never considered those up to this point. How do those compare to TI flats (I’ll search in a minute, just trying to get the gist of the difference between the two).

Thanks.

WOW!! I'm having the same problem. I never thought about the strings causing it... Interesting

I'm assuming you are using TI Flats as well, or is this happening with other types of strings?

If you are already trying flats, I would go with the sunbeams. I use sunbeams on my Lakland JO bass and I couldn't be happier. They are bright at first, but the longer you keep them on, the better they sound. I have another bass for my "modern" sound needs, so I enjoy the old sounding strings on my JO. You can get a wonderful growl and bite out of them still. Man, those are great strings.
