Question TI flats on your Longhorn?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone put short scale TI Flats on their Longhorn? Do they fit scale wise and also diameter wise in the tuner holes? I've heard about some strings breaking off at the tuner when bent to wind, and this did happen to me once before I heard it was an issue with others too. This is too expensive to experiment with!

I Put SS TI Flats on my Jerry Jones Longhorn. They did not fit well but I managed to make them work without breakage.
They sound great but you do need to be careful.

I believe that TI short scales are actually made for 32" scaled basses. Since they were designed for Hofner basses, which actually do have 30" scales, but use a trapeze style bridge that requires a longer string. Therefore, you will most likely have the string past the wrap on the tuning peg, which then makes it a prime candidate for breakage. And for a strings set that often exceeds $50 USD, this is not a good thing.
If you got to juststrings.com and type "short scale bass" on the search engine, you will find short scale strings of all different types and gauges designed specifically for shorties.
I would go this route instead of cutting down long scaled strings due to the Longhorn's tiny guitar-sized tuning peg holes that need the thinner wrapped end than the thicker cut 34 inch scale.
Good luck!

On the Jerry Jones FAQ he has a list of strings known to work on the 4 string basses.

D'Addario EXL 170S ~ Nickel (Factory standard)
D'Addario ECB81S ~ Flats
D'Addario ENR71S ~ Half Round
D'Addario EPS 170S ~ Steel
RotoSound RS 77S ~ Jazz Flats
RotoSound RS 66S ~ Swing Bass Stainless
RotoSound RS 88S ~ Tru-Bass Nylon Tape

I've tried GHS Precisions and can confirm they work as well. I eventually worked my way back to Chromes, though, because I like the tension compared to the Rotos and I think the brightness works well with the short scale.
