TI Jazz Flats = TI Nickel Flat Wound Roundcore?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am thinking of asking for TI Jazz flats for xmas, as they are highly reguarded by many.
I have done a bit of googling, and I have some questions:

I play a J-bass copy in a pop rock outfit. Will these be completely inapropriate?

All I can see available online is "Thomastik-Infeld Electric Bass Nickel Flat Wound Roundcore"
are these the same thing as the "TI Jazz Flats" that so many love?

They only seem available as a set of (.043, .056, .070, .100)
I am used to a .106+ E string, and play a bit heavily w/ my right hand.
so I like high tension. Will these not feel tight enough?
Does TI offer these in a heavier guage?

"Nickel flat wound" is another name for them. The product code for the standard 4 string set is JF344, so you can use that to make sure.

There is no heavier tension. That's one of the big factors in why some people love them and others don't. As for whether it's appropriate I'm not sure. It's a very subjective thing. I haven't put on a pair yet (decided to try the D'addario Chromes first), but from what I hear they're very bright for a flatwound and will last a really long time.

They are a roundwound string with a flatwound outer wrap. There is also a layer of silk in there to kill the upper harmonics. Strangely, I find them to have a good midrange response, so they are not completely dead sounding. They are initially bright, but settle down in a few days to give a nice, smooth sound.
Regarding tension, they are a very loose feeling string-even looser than DR lo-riders (the round I'm most familiar with). In switching from the rounds I had to add some neck relief and raise the saddles a bit to make them work. If this doesn't sound like an endorsement, they may not be for you, but I love them and may never change.

Luv the TI's, but.....

I've used TI Jazz Flats, aka "Thomastik-Infeld Electric Bass Nickel Flat Wound Roundcore" on many different basses for many different genres and keep coming back to them. They do have a low tension and get mellow with age (less bright) so I've experimented with D'addario Chromes, which are a good choice for the price. But if tension and gauge are an issue you might try a set of La Bella "Deep Talking Jamerson Flats" .052-.110. Huge, tight and long-lasting. They run about $40 + shipping. Bottom line on your original question.....I use them (TI Flats) for blues/ rock, and jazz but you might want something that retains their brightness longer for hard rock.
