TI Jazz Flats for a 5 String

Sign in to disble this ad
I use these strings on my P bass and would not use anything else. I have LaBella rounds on my Stingray5 and love the sound on that bass.

I recently picked up another SR5 and I am thinking about putting TI Jazz flats on that bass too. However I have heard a few reports that there are problems with the B string.

I love the sound of the TI Jazz flats on my P and the most important thing that I like is the fact that they have a very low tension as far as flats are concerned. I have played other flats and the tension was too much.

Thoughts on the B issue please. Thanks

I use them on my SR5 and I love them!
I have never had a problem with the B string.
After putting them on you will have to adjust the intonation by moving the saddles forward or back until the intonation is correct at the 12th fret.
Then check the string height at the 12th fret. I set mine according to factory specs at 3mm.
After doing that, you will notice the tension isn't that much different than other flats, but they will "feel" softer.
The B string is larger than most, check how it sits in the nut. I have a custom bone nut and did not have to make any adjustments to it. So you will probably be OK there, too.
I love them. They are expensive at first, but I would go through three sets of D'Addario Chromes for every one set of TI Flats, because they last a very long time.
I recommend ordering them from www.bassemporium.com.
Some people, even some famous old school studio bassists, don't like the five strings for jazz. All of my jazz musician friends love the tone of my SR5 with the TI Flats.
Get them. You will be very happy with them.
Peace, Johnny

if you like them on your P and are comfortable with the low tension, you'll be very happy with the 5 string set. i read here on talkbass that someone had trouble with their B-string. i think that's an anomaly and could happen to anyone using any string. buy the 5 string TI Flats and be happy...

Another happy TI flats user on a SR5 here. The B string is great. I had to jack the action way up on all the strings to get the setup how I like it, which cleaned up the tone and increased the tension a bit.

I'm fine with their BEADG's tension for fingerstyle (don't find quite enough tension for fast picking).

Had a neat experience recently. New 5 bass that had Fender BEADG (7250s? with .125 B & .100 E I think). Though the B must have more tension than TI's B, I found it very floppy. I think the issue was that Fender B is relatively floppy compared to EADG while the TI seems fairly balanced through the set.

Anyone else noted anything like that?

I am loving my TI flats on my sr5. The low tension is great I think. I cut my ring finger on my fretting hand with hedge clippers last Sunday and it has 4 stitches in it and is all taped up, the low tension on these strings is absoutely getting me through this weekend. But I love the sound. The A is a little weak on this bass, but I just got it last month and am still working in the setup, so I think I'll eventually get it solved. The B is a little weird in that if you don't fret it cleanly it dies out quickly, but that is just motivation to have better technique! All in all, I can't use other strings now! Oh, and check out mymusicstuff.com, it was about $68 including shipping for the 5 string set.

I use TI flats on one of my 5'ers, and I have tried the TI's on all of my basses just to see how they sounded. They weren't "perfect" for all of the basses, but they are perfect for at least one, maybe two of them. The low B on my MPG Level 5 (34" scale) is just massive, with no issues of any kind, using the TI flats. And I agree that the TI's are generally more balanced sounding, string to string, than many other string sets.

I've had a set on my fretless for 8 years and the low B is still rockin' the house.
