TI Jazz flats, technique and setup

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks,

This weekend I got a Pino P-bass. It sounds and feels predictably great!! It did raise some questions, though...

I noticed that when playing a little hard (I tend to do that in a live situation, with a loud drummer), right above the pickup, I got the feeling the pickup was overdriven. Of course, TI flats are very supple, so the amplitude tends to be pretty big if you play hard.

Now for the questions:
1. Should I raise the strings?
2. Should I lower the pickups?
3. Should I adjust my technique?
4. All of the above?
5. Something else?

Oh, and for some reason, I thought the Strings-forum was the most appropriate, but feel free to correct me.

Thanks!
Ray

The output from TIJFs is pretty strong, so if you have no other issues playing with the action set where it is (clacking, buzzing, etc.) I'd just lower the pickups a bit. IME, there's a better than average chance the overall tone will improve.
I've been playing these strings for 8-9 years and I think you'll find you will modify your technique somewhat, particularly when you dig in. You'll still be able to dig in, you'll just do it a little differently than with other strings.
P-Bass and TI Jazz Flats are a great combination!

Thanks Dan, I'll try lowering the pickups.
However, I did a small gig last night, and my bass sounded so smooth and full, that I can't imagine the tone improving any further! Plus I notice my technique is adjusting a bit to the feel of the TI's; they're great and versatile strings! Very responsive to changes in attack.
The fact that they're on a Pino bass must help, too...
