TI Jazz Rounds vs. TI Superalloy

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have D'Addario Chromes on my G&L ASAT and like the nice thump that they provide, and I usually play the pickups in passive mode. The sound system at my church, however, is super heavy on the low end and lacks good mid response. The tone controls on the bass give me a lot of latitude to play with but I think that I need some characteristics of a round wound string to get what I want.

I still want the warmth of a nickel string and I have read good things about both the Jazz Rounds and the Superalloys. I also really liked the TI flats that I had on my fretless MIM Jazz bass for a solid year and a half, but again, I need more round wound articulation for the sound system that I have to play through.

It would be great to hear some someone that has tried both. Certainly users of either are more than encouraged to weigh in on your experience.

Thanks . . .

I think that SuperAlloys are going to be the better choice of the two. They remind me a lot of the Jazz Flats in their midrange and they way that they break in to a subtle/useful vibe.

The Jazz Rounds have that very soft/light feel, and they break in to sound super dark. I liked them on my Turner Electroline because they tamed the Turner's extreme transparency. But on most "normal" basses they don't have the cut that you are talking about.

Right now I use TI JFs on my ABG and my fretted J, and have used every other set on one of my basses at one time or an other. To me the SAs are the closest thing to a roundwound version of the JFs. Maybe a little livelier out of the box, but they sound great and seem to keep sounding great just like the JFs. I was skeptical when the SuperAlloys came out because I thought that they might not be up to the standard of their other sets, but they are excellent.

The Super Alloys are among, if not the absolute warmest rounds on the market. Bright at first, but once they settle in, they are very very warm. If you want a bit of round wound 'modern' tone, but want a lot of warmth, SA's are perfect for that!

I agree that the Super Alloys are... well, super! I've been playing them for about a year now after going through a trying out all the options phase; before that I played DRs. Now I only play TI Super Alloys. They last a long time... and are truly warm, yet modern sounding strings.

I put the SuperAlloys on Friday night, practiced on Saturday then played the normal church gig Sunday morning. So far I like them quite a bit. I still like the thump of flats but I am really digging the modern articulation of these strings.

out of 4 basses in my stable - 2 are strung with JF's, 2 are strung with SA's.

That pretty much sum's it up for me.
