TI vs DR for nickle roundwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok so my question is... Is it worth it for some TI nickle roundwounds? I've been looking around and i was going to pick up some DR sunbeam nickle roundwounds its going to be like 30 something with shipping from musiciansfriend. Or i could get some TI nickle roundwounds and if i read correctly they are pure nickle i heard someone say. Those would be 50 bucks so it would be free shipping are these going to necessarily sound any better or last longer(longer lasting being the key) than the DR sunbeams? dunno if i should splurge on them or if the sunbeams are going to be just as good. I know its all personal pref but im a relatively new bass player and only went through 2 sets of strings so far.

Thanks John

I used sunbeams the first three years I played bass and loved them. Go for it. Change em' once every six months and you'll be good...

I would go for the Sunbeams for cost/longetivity ratio- the TIs are really nice too, but won't last 2/3 longer!

Buy the Sunbeams on eBay and save a few bucks.

Buy the sun beams and some ernieball wonder wipes or deoxit axe wipes. Cheaper than TIs and will last a looong time.

I've played both, and definitely prefer the TI Jazz Rounds. The sunbeams are great strings too though. I think the biggest difference is in the feel. The TIs are much lower tension, and they use thinner windings for the roundwound wrap, so they have a smoother feel. The TIs start out with a bit of a warmer tone too. But if you prefer more of a 'standard' string tension, then the sunbeams would be my top reccomendation for a nickel string.

TI Jazz Rounds are a very unique string given their low tension. Unless you are sure about them, I would go for the Sunbeams. TI Superalloys are also a great string that fall more into the traditional feel category. And so are Sadowsky Blue Nickels. Some many strings, so little money.

The TI Power Bass and Super Alloy string are way out front IMO.

Those are two great strings. Unless you have super sensitve ears, I don't think you will go wrong either way.

I love TI strings. They are great. Their round sets mentioned above, plus I love their flat JF344s. Having said that, DR makes great round wounds, too! The Sun Beams are super, but so too are their Hi Beams and Lo Riders. The only ones I haven't tried are their Black Beauties, but I'll bet they are fantastic as well, based on the reviews.

I think this might be the least expensive string site on the net:

http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/thomastik.html <= this page has the TIs you are looking for. They also have DRs for low prices, but I don't see the Sun Beams listed. I'm sure you can get them, too! Just call the toll free number and ask a live person.

I love both TI's and DR's! The TI SA's are the best non SS string I've tried. The sunbeams are really nice too, but the TI's tame my L2000 wonderfully without chastizing it.

Try both, and see which ones you and your bass prefer.
