Tightening B string by switching to Flats

I love mellow warm bass tones to preface things. I was thinking about getting a set of flats (Chromes specifically) for my 4 string Fender P and I learned that the tension on these strings is higher than rounds (everything I own is currently strung with GHS Pressurewounds). So I was thinking I would get a set of Chromes for my VM Jazz 5.

The B string on that bass is definitely looser than the others and I have to play very light on it to avoid it completely farting out. I was thinking the extra tension would be nice for the B string and a good opportunity to try out Flats. Am I right in this thinking?

All strings will definitely have more tension, but B string will still likely be looser than other strings. You may want to check with bassstringsonline.com. Can't remember the owners name, but he is a member here on talkbass. He may have these strings available, and from what I have seen, his prices are very good. He may also be able to build you a custom set of strings with a larger diameter B string. Larger diameter strings need more tension to achieve the same note. By stepping up one or two sizes on the B string, you may be able to get what you are after. You may want to order a single string for the B in a larger gauge to see if it will solve your problem. May only need one string instead of a full set.

Take a look at the tension chart for chromes and then compare it to the tension of what you’re using now: http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDe...per_Long_Scale

Playing with a light touch is key to mastering low B technique, regardless of string brands. If you haven't taken private lessons with an experienced 5 string expert, it's something I highly recommend to improve your technique.

Some flats have low tension, some flats have high tension. StevieMac is on the right track suggesting Chromes I think, as opposed to my favorites (TI jazz flats) which are rather low tension.
