How does one know when a set of strings has seen it's day and needs to be replaced?

When you pick up the bass, play some notes and think to yourself "i wonder if I should get new strings"

Seriously... thats when.

That's a great answer...I would just change it to "sound characteristics" rather than "sound output". The output may never change with age.

I never change mine, but I play flats. One set is more than 30 years old and sounds fine.

For me, it's when I have to start cranking in some highs on the amp...

Just happened tonight. Lost the new string "bite". Time for a fresh set.

For me it's about 6 months. About 6 months after I bought the bass (came with elixers), the g string snapped. About 6 months or so after I replaced those strings with some daddario prosteels, the strings went dead. Had my current set of strings for about 3 or 4 months, got the broken-in sound but still pretty bright because they're pro steels.

Will vary for everyone but for me, it's about 6 months per set.

I also will notice they don't stay in tune quite as much.

Are you going for the Joe Osborne trophy?

I have had the same set of flats on my fretless for about 3 years. I have another set that I think I should put on, but I am not sure about if I should because I always here that flats should not be replaced. And the fact that flats are expensive!

In case it matters, I have Rotos on now.

Thanks for all the input guys. I figured it's just personal preference. Probably play a couple more shows with these strings and then put on a fresh set.
