How does one know when a set of strings has seen it's day and needs to be replaced?

Seriously... thats when.

I never change mine, but I play flats. One set is more than 30 years old and sounds fine.

About 6 months or so after I replaced those strings with some daddario prosteels, the strings went dead. Had my current set of strings for about 3 or 4 months, got the broken-in sound but still pretty bright because they're pro steels.
Will vary for everyone but for me, it's about 6 months per set.

I have another set that I think I should put on, but I am not sure about if I should because I always here that flats should not be replaced. And the fact that flats are expensive!
In case it matters, I have Rotos on now.
