It depends on your style. If you put lighter strings on, you'll have to refocus your technique. Heavier gauge strings take more work to play, lighter strings have less tension and are easier to move.
I've got a set of D'Addario super lights (EXL 220-5) on one of my basses, and lighter strings will make you have to rethink your approach a little bit. When I play it, I sometimes I have to focus on playing with a lighter touch. If you play with the same touch as your heavier strings, you'll choke notes. I also find that lighter strings (with a lighter touch) have better sustain.
IMO, strumming is a technique separate from string gauge. I've never had any problem on my heavier stringed basses anyway. But who knows, you may dig it. Strings are a pretty personal preference, so it's all about what works for YOU. Unlike BassMent, I personally don't like stainless steel strings, I go for nickels. Strings are something you can experiment with for relatively cheaply, so I say give it a shot.
