tinny strings

hey guys i'm pretty new to bass but on my fender jazz bass the top string only sounds good up to the 4th fret then it rings and gets really tinny sounding. does anyone know what i can do? thanks,

get a p bass!
,,you're not laying down enough info=intonation `on',new strings? only the e sound odd?etc.
