Tone of new flats - Is pressure wound or ground wound the answer for the long haul?

Sign in to disble this ad
Changed to flats approx 6 months ago and went with Fenders; liked them at first but they got pretty stiff and really dull (which most people like) over time

Just put some EB flats on a backup bass; love the tone but assume that these two will loose some brightness over time

Is pressurewound the way to go?
Basicaly want the smoothness and fat (but not super dull) sound of new flats over the long run.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Between the sets you have mentioned, I prefer the GHS Pressurewounds. They have a deeper tone than regular rounds, close to flats. They are smoother than rounds but still have the feel of them, which is cool to me since they are kinder to my fretless fingerboards. And yes, they are brighter than flats, but not near that of a regular round. They sort of split the difference between flats and rounds. www.bpstrings.com has the best price on the web for them that I have seen so far.

I liked them better than ground wounds, but not as good as flats. Try the pressure wounds.
