Too many strings, confussed.

G,day, new to forum. Have been playing bass on and off for a few years. Just recently joined a rock band and we are starting to play a few smallish shows. I have not had a lot of experience with different strings and was hoping someone with more experience could recomend some. I have two basses, a Fender squire and a Vester(just low end basses) which I play through a Fender M80 100w amp. We play up tempo rock which I play with a pick. I am on a tight budget and I just dont have the money to experiment with different brands and guages. Being on a tight budget I need some well priced strings that I will get some decent life out of. So many to to chose from it is confusing. Any suggetions much appreciated. Cheers.

Good question. This is my first post too! Welcome.
In short, the string market is full of hype and has turned into a jungle of choices and brands. The question is where to begin...I would suggest to begin starting goals about your sound. Specifically, goals about the tone and plability you desire.

If you are still learning about strings some of the info on the FAQ page might help you:
http://www.professorstring.com/string_FAQs.htm

Here is an article we published to help explain some of the marketing behind strings:

I hope some of this helps. Some of the best players in the world use this forum, it too, is a good starting point.

Best Wishes,
-Prof

strings vary and there's a huge difference in sound and feel between all of them what works for one doesnt work for another
i'm sorry to say but the best way to find your string is to try different brands and spend some money

What is available at your local stores? You might go through a few sets before figuring out what gauge you prefer. Then a set or two deciding which brand or construction (nickel/stainless steel).

I'd suggest starting with GHS BassBoomers and taking the bass with you to match the gauge to avoid needing a new setup. For pick played rock, at a slightly higher price point DR Lo-riders work well with Fender style basses. They are available in nickel or SS.
