Trubass versus nexus?

Sign in to disble this ad
I use Trubass on a fretless to make a more upright sound.
I was going to order a spare set of and then I remembered nexus.

The thing is: I don't know what coated strings supposed to be for or even what they look like. Are they flat? Smooth? What do they sound like compared to rounds, flats etc?

I haven't tried them, but Nexus are basically coated (painted in special black stuff) roundwounds like the DR black beauties, and are supposed to be instead of standard steel bass strings. The coating is to make them last longer and look cool.

They will probably damage your fretboard on a fretless (unless its epoxied or Ebony) where the Trubass wont, because Trubass (as you know) is essentially flatwounds underneath the tape.

Hope this helps

I love hearing when someone wants to buy a spare set of Trubass strings. In 1969 my dad strung up his 1967 Eko Florentine with a set of short scale trubass strings (he still has the original black and white packaging with the card saying 'Endorsed by John Entwistle of The Who'). When I decided to start playing in 92, I learnt on his bass with those strings. Years later he is STILL playing the same strings and they still sound great in a Paul McCartney sort of way.

Nexus play a bit like elixir and sound totally different to nylon flatwounds, though I seriously doubt they can be gigged at least once a week for 40 years.

Lol! I have a set of Trubass which I bought around 3 years ago, and they sound exactly the same as the day I bought them. I knew the Trubass strings would last a long time, but 40 years is amazing!

I doubt the Nexus would last a year.
