Truss Adjustment after a string change?

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched these forums looking for an answer and didn't find anything. Maybe I just didn't know what to look for?

I am thinking about putting a set of Medium chromes on my Squier PJ in place of the stock strings. Even if I don't put the flats on it, I am going to put the same gauge rounds on it. (same gauge as the flats that is: .105, .85, .70, .50)

My question is, will I need to make a truss adjustment after I do this?

I have always been told that flats have higher tension than rounds. Especially ernie ball rounds which is what I use.

Anyway, thanks for any help you all can give. I just want to try and save myself some trouble.

You may need to, because the D and G string are a larger gauge than stock. No big deal, though.

I wouldn't say flats are higher tension than rounds.

Cool

So you think I should just put them on there and give it a few days to see if the truss rod needs tightening?

Yes, that would be a good idea.

+1 - Yeah - let it set for a day or two/three - then check again - ya know; the credit card test.

You may also need to do a slight intonation adjustment after you've adjusted the truss rod. The physics of flatwounds are just a little bit different than rounds. There's a good sticky at the top of the setup forum if you need it.
