I just recently ordered myself a Schecter Stiletto Custom-5 bass. It isn't here yet but i would like to figure out what i need to get the sound I want out of it. I'm not completely sure what the bass itself sounds like but i would LOVE to get a deep thump sound out of it. I heard Flatwounds are good for this but ive never played a set in my life. I'm looking to play with my brothers band every now and then. They play dance, Reggae, Dub, and funk style songs. If you know of any 5 string flatwound sets that can help get this sound please help me out!

My vote is for D'Addario Chromes. I have them on my Fender P5 and my Ibanez SR905. They are a little bright at first but will mellow out to a nice deep thump after while without being quit as dark sounding as some other flats (IMO of course). I recently tried a set of Labella Deep Talkin’ Flats and found the Chromes worked better for me personally. IMHO the B string sounds much fatter with the Chromes.

There are tons of threads here on flats if you do a search. You will find PLENTY of reading. Good luck.

Speaking of D'Addario Chromes, a few years ago I wrote an article about flatwound strings using audio samples that were done with Chromes. I've been meaning to add some more audio samples, but I'm still using the same set of Chromes (don't play my fretless all that much ). I like the sound, but it's not all the useful for what I normally play.

I always like hearing the back to back comparisons. Thanks for posting.

You can't go wrong with Chromes, or TI flats. Either will do the job, but they are very different. If you just want the dub thump, get the heavier chrome gauge. The Ti's are very flexible and midrangey and can be used for soloing or higher register passages.
