Trying different strings on a Takamine TB10

Sign in to disble this ad
So.. i bought this bass because it looked so dang cool. And because i was looking for a good sounding acoustic bass guitar. Acoustically it isnt loud... not like my uprights.. and i understand why. So that aside, I play gut strings so my tendency to want gut strings for the TB10 is real. Cant seem to find any so i see a few strings out there that might work in their place. And also cant find a nylon core string except for a set of thomastik acousticore bronze with a nylon core.

So i was thinkin to ask around... there must be someone out there that knows anything about using strings not made for their bass but they work.

so a few of the strings out there i was thinkin about trying out but dropping the dime for a set of strings then they dont work seems wasteful.

so just askin for some thoughts on the subject.

here is a list of a few strings
Rotosound 4000
supernils
innovation golden slaps

yah..upright strings on an acoustic bass guitar... the steels drive me crazy... even looking at changing out the bridge to something more familiar.. maple instead of the ebony one that came with it to see if it can get a little more acoustic volume out of the thing.

Any thoughts..???

I am intrigued by this bass by virtue of the possibility of using db strings, due to the bridge configuration...Here's a pic to that effect:http://www.monkeytar.co.kr/front/php/product.php?product_no=2798&main_cate_no=&display_ group=http://www.monkeytar.co.kr/front/php/product.php?product_no=2798&main_cate_no=&display_ group=
Scroll the page, and you will see shots illustrating that this instrument is strung with DB strings.

1/4 size would be the way to go, I put a set of super- sensitive 1/4s on a Washburn Ab20 (heavily modified with DB parts: radiused ebony nut and fingerboard and cut-down maple DB bridge in place of the former plastic.
Combined with the Db strings, this made for an aurally convincing replica of DB tone. However, I have to cut down and install a DB tailpiece, as the bridge could not sustain the tension with the stringing method I attempted.

I think that the Washburn with all of its' Mods sounds amplified much as an amplified plywood DB does, and I imagine the Tak B10 would be even more convincing in this regard, although I have yet to hear anyone eking a convincing Db tone out of the TakTB10 in any recorded media on the web, with one exception posted in a talkbass thread RE sale of a TB10, with an mp3 sample.
I am sorry that I can't post an url for the thread, but a search in the BG forsale archives will yield the mp3 sample.

In my opinion, a hollow body, DB-style parts (Bridge, FB, nut, tailpiece)DB style right hand attack, playing on and into the fingerboard, and DB strings can foster the illusion of a large violin-family instrument.
