Alright, I've been hunting for a set of strings (and then the terminology for such when what i had failed). I've heard them called 'piano wound", where the winding stops early so that just the core of the string passes over the bridge saddle. What term should I be using in this case, because I'd like to find a set. |

Taperwound strings taper the outer wrap down so there's not as much at the bridge as a non-tapered string. But Rotosound makes (or at least used to make) some specifically called "Piano Core" where ONLY the plain core wire goes over the saddles. You might find some information by looking for "exposed core".
My limited experience was on a specific set of prototype ones D'Addario sent the store I managed to try on a headless bass with a Steinberger licensed bridge. That was decades ago so I don't recall much about the strings.

Exposed core strings are sets like Rotosound PSD 99 (Piano String Design... go figure...), and GHS Contact Core Super Steels. |

"Company President, Richard Mari Cocco Jr. has worked closely with many of the world's foremost bass players to develop the unique design of SUPER STEPS. This product line has a clear and distinct sound while maintaining an exceptionally quick response. These flexible strings have an exposed core at the bridge which helps bring out the high overtone content of each note."

I can't control it properly for my life, but when I get a good clean Entwistle like hit they sound twice as loud and a lot like his late mid '60s tone (still my favorite, I don't think he ever sounded better). | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
