| Trying something new with my 6 string (semi-piccolo content)

So I don't know what I'm going to end up with, but my 6 string Ibanez SR has not been getting the love it deserves lately, so I'm going to experiment a bit. I moved recently and dug out TONS of old strings for both guitar and bass, all different gauges / brand / type / age / wear etc. I was reading alittle about piccolo basses, and while the traditional 1-octave up from standard tuning won't work on my 34" scale, I'm curious to see what will. I've read that you can string guitar strings on a bass by running them through the ball-end of a bass string (to catch in the bridge), and like I said I'm in no shortage of old strings (kind of a hoarder.... its a problem)
Basically I want this bass to go as high as I can, and most likely tune in either standard bass 4ths, or tune it like a 6 string guitar and get into some chordal territory. I'm torn between tuning it like a standard guitar (although in a different key, for whatever strings I get on it) or going with one of the folky odd-ball open guitar tunings.
I know that in that box I have a few sets of bass strings, possibly an extra high C string, possibly a low B string (from a 7-string guitar set), and at least 1 set of guitar strings... and as I have no idea what gauges any of these loose random strings are, I'm basically going to line them up by diameter and start picking and choosing what to string up. If I try a string and it snaps, oh well move on to the next one. Best case scenario I have a new reason to play my 6, worst case I get rid of all my old junk strings!
