Smile Tuning down to D with a .95 or .100 guage Roundwound E String

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Everyone,

I am sure this question has been asked on this forum about a dozen times or so, but does anybody here tune down to D with a .95 or a .100 guage roundwound string?

Considering how a .105 is usually recommended by most luthiers if you are going to down to D.

Thanks Everyone,

Joe

It will make your string loose. You will have to raise you saddle and maybe a slight truss rod adjustment, plus intonation.

I am sure a ton of people here have done it, but never had. I do however tune down to drop C with .115's.

i've done it before. i don't anymore though. I use 105s, but i'm going to start using 110s. I like my strings thick and stiff

I use a .105 tuned to drop-C#. It would probably be better if I used .110 though.

I would recommend at least .105 from my experience, but it can work with .100 if you greatly prefer that gauge.

I use a .115 for the D and I still find it to be to wobbly.
As for the .095.... simply... don't do it...

105 is kind of light for me for an E, but there are a lot of guys who use lighter strings - I personally like the tension of the thicker guages.

As long as your bass is properly set up, and you don't have a sledgehammer right hand touch, you'll be fine.

I tune down to D regularly, and even to C for one song. I use .40-100
Hi Beams on my main gigging bass, and .35-.95 Elites on a couple of other basses.

I use 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 for DGCF - anything smaller is too low of a tension for me.

I also use a 110. They are DR Black Beauties and with the thickness and coating, It really sounds great in D.

I used to do it all the time. They key, for me (at least) was to run stainless strings. I used Rotosounds in those days...

I've used 95 rotosound nickels that I tuned to drop D and it worked, but it is very floppy. If you want really low action, than I'd say increase the gauge size. I still say go for it- but 105's are much better.
