Tuning G D A E - what strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried this yesterday on my Epiphone Viola.

I uptuned the

E to G (1 1/2 step up)
A to D (2 1/2 step up)
D to A (3 1/2 step up)
G to E (4 1/2 step up)

It was quite effing awesome, the tone really sounded Banjoesque.

So I want to keep a reasonnable tension like I had on my E strings uptuned to G. But I don't know much what gauge of string to take.

People tend to think that bassist are failed guitarist... In my case, I am a failed Banjist!

I recommend single strings, because I don't know if ANY string sets were designed to tuned this way.

Edit: Err sorry, thought you were asking about ACTUAL sets, not gauge in general.

Let's see...
For your new D and A string, a D and G string would quite do the trick.

So I guess, basing on the basic 100-80-60-40 setup, I'd take 90-60-35-20, something like that.

I know that I must buy single strings. But I don't know what gauge of string to buy.
