I had one on a Fender Jazz when I played in an alternative band, and it worked like a charm. You can tune them down as low as Cflat, although I only went to D. It always dropped right to D, perfectly in tune, and without throwing the other strings out of tune. The only problem I ever had was a couple of times I forgot to switch it back to E and started the next song on the wrong note... but it only took a second to switch after I realized my mistake. You do have to make sure your string will slide through the nut slot without binding. They make them to fit pretty much any bass without modifications, and it just takes a few minutes to install, and a few more to set up to drop to the note you want (you adjust a small knob). You have to check them periodically to make sure they are still set up right. I usually did it just before each gig, and sometimes it would take a small adjustment ( just took a second) and then it would stay perfectly in tune all night. If you play some songs in regular tuning and some in drop D, then there is no better way. Sure beats having to re-tune between songs... Definately worth the $80 dollars as far as I'm concerned.
