you broke the string, most shops sell individual strings if you were putting a new pack on. make sure you know how to use your tuner or will try and tune the string to high and it will break.

Everything is fine, but now you know that strings have a breaking point, and putting them under extreme tension can cause snapping and potential lacerations.

The bridge saddles are normally loose (save a few types of bridges that are set-screwed down, or tune-o-matic style bridges) and are held into place by the downward pressure of the string.

Just replace the string and don't tune them up much higher than pitch again.

A common cause for this is starting out with the string already above pitch and tuning with a tuner without listening to what you are doing. You tune it higher and higher thinking you are approaching the correct pitch when you are actually approaching the pitch an octave above the one you want. The string won't take it.

And depending on your bass, it may be totally normal for the string saddle to be loose and floppy when it doesn't have a string on it.
