Two broken string in a month, help!

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry if there is a glaringly obvious answer somewhere nearby, I wasn't exactly sure what to search.

So, about a month ago, I broke my G string (DR Hi-Beams) while slapping/popping. No big deal, it was an old set anyway. I replaced them with a set of Lo-Riders, because that's what my music store had in stock. Now, I just broke the G string again, after less than a month!

I'm sort of unsure what to get now. I really like the DRs, but I can't replace them so often. Should I just get them again? A heavier gauge? I mostly play prog/alt rock, but slap pretty often too. My technique is also pretty aggressive.

Thanks

Is the string breaking at the bridge?

Check the bridge saddle for any sharp edges. That's the #1 cause for breaking strings.

Thanks guys, I don't see any sharp edges, but I also found out that I was popping way harder than I should be. Lightening up should probably help. Would a heavier gauge help too?

Strength is proportional to cross-sectional area, so yes. But if you're gonna lighten up on your pop, it may not be necessary.
