Ugh... did I do wrong?

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me preface by saying I have only installed one other set of flatwounds(D'ad Chome XL) on my Epiphone EB3 and it went fine, no issues. And after I returned the EB3, I took the strings, cut them down, pinched the ends, and put them on my Bronco without any problem.

Now, I got some webstrings flats for my new artcore agb140 longscale. I go to put on the E, cut a little off the end---the whole damn thing starts unraveling. I didnt clip into the fattest taper, there was no need to even go that far in. I tried to salvage it, push the winds together and put it on, but once it was on, it unraveled near the nut and farted terribly whenever played.

Aside from that these are covered in the nastiest black manunfacturing dust... I expect a little, but after one string my hands are black. These strings also don't feel great. Kind of surprised, because I find that for the price, their rounds and guitar strings are VERY acceptable.

Did I do something wrong? Is there something I should have done? Pinched the end? Or did I just get a dud set?

Contact the place you bought it from and/or the manufacturer. I'm sure they'll remedy the situation.

I'm sure you did nothing wrong. As far as I'm aware (and the half dozen or so sets of flats I have strung with) there is no difference when stringing than when using rounds.

Sounds like either a very old set of strings or a very bad set of strings. It is not a result of anything you did.

sounds strange... i've got a set of webstrings flats that are pretty decent. nothing amazing, feel a bit like chromes but "deader" sounding, but they sure work fine as flats. i strung them up the same as i would rounds (cut to length, wrap as usual) and it went fine. hopefully they take care of you...

Thanks guys. Well I'll email em and let em know, they seem like a decent company. In the meantime I went to GC and got some chromes... and played that damn fiesta red squier again, one of these times I'm not going to be able to resist it.

I put the Chromes on, no problem whatsoever, except that this bass is so long that some of the cloth is on the brown side of the nut. Sounds fantastic though.

Using a stanley knife to just fray a bit of it seems to do in those situations.
