I have 6 different sets of strings that I alternate about every 2-3 weeks. My natural oil Warwick Corvette needs to be waxed every few weeks so I usually switch the strings (i.e. flats to rounds to grounds) (surprisingly my intonation remains pretty true despite all the changing)

I'm wondering though, all of that tightening and loosening of the strings has got to be causing some stress on them. Is it a matter of time when one of them snaps while I'm tuning it up to tune?

Most of my strings get narrower/thinner at the tuning peg (I think that's called tappered right?) I imagine that helps give some flexibility for the strings.

Generally the re-tensioning of strings up to pitch can tend to deaden the strings. I personally don't feel that it makes the strings any more prone to breakings, but I do feel from experience that swapping Rounds off and on will deaden them faster.

I also don't feel swapping on and off have any real effect on flats... or less at least.

How do you change strings from bass to another bass without them breaking after maybe 2 changes?

Mine always have kinked and broken at the silk.

Only 1 set has a kink in it and that's near the peg and right before the bridge, so it's a non-issue for me.

I tend to break my strings at the tuning maching although if I think I am going to put them on and off again I will leave extra string on the peg so that I can trim any kinks
