Unintended Side Effect of DR Coated Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I just installed some Black Beauties on my 75 Jazz Reissue. They look awesome, and I'm liking the tone so far, although I prefer nickel strings (and would have bought Sunbeams if GC had them in stock).

Anyway, it is a relatively noisy bass, and actually, the string ground was disconnected on it when the previous owner put on a replacement bridge. Got that fixed last weekend, so at least touching the strings stops the buzz. But with coated strings, it seems I'm not getting as good a "connection" and the ground buzz isn't eliminated when I hold the strings. Kind of a bummer, and may have to go back to regular "metal" strings.

Maybe you could scrape the coating off of the strings where they contact your bridge saddles. If you like the strings, it might be worth a shot before you give up on them. Good luck.

I would imagine that the strings are already in contact with the bridge at the ball end ... to coating would need to be removed where the finger is contacting the string ... but it was a good thought
