| Unit Wt - Round vs Flat

This might be a serious yawner, but I'm just curious.
Looking at the D'Addario string tension guide, the difference in unit weight between round wound and flat wound strings doesn't seem as much as intuition would suggest.
For example:
CB100SL Stainless Flats - .00189
PSB100SL ProSteel Round - .00169
CB075SL Flats - .00101
PSB075SL Rounds - .00096
Stainless and non-stainless steel have almost identical densities, and the strings above have the same OD. The difference in volume for a square and the same size inscribed circle is 21.5% less for the circle. But the unit weights above only differ by between 5 and 10%.
Does the manufacturing process slightly flatten the wire in a roundwound string? or is the core larger in a flatwound string than in the same size roundwound? or ???
Sorry, this maybe a question only a warped engineer could care about even a little.
