Question The unknown string question

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a bass that has some dark gray round wound strings with deep red windings (think TIs). They are more rough than say Fender's or DA's. They may be old but don't look it at all and have a fairly flat wound sound for rounds. Seem to have good mids. I'm guessing they are likely nickles because of the dark gray color. I like flats on most things but they sound interesting and would love to know what they are.

Any ideas as to what they might be?

Thanks

Good chance they are GHS Boomers, which have a good low end and limited treble. They are a nice roundwound for flatwound fans.

Interesting. I played those some 20+ years ago but can't remember much about them. Of course they have likely changed some since then.

The rough feel first made me think of some kind of Rotos. From the feel they seem like they could eat up frets, but possibly they are nickle.

Because these are rough I was thinking Rotos, but they don't sound clanky. But it's been years since I used rotos.

Any other possibilities?

Really well-worn Rotos are not bright and clanky.

"I'm guessing they are likely nickles because of the dark gray color".

SS strings tend to be dull compared to shiny nickel strings. Just post a pic

I don't know what you've got, but I put new rotos on everything I buy.
