Unwinding to lower the action

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello there I've seen here and there that some people unwind there E and sometimes A stings near the bridge so that they sit closer to the saddle which I guess lowers the action.

I'm just curious if its worth it because without the winding around them, wouldn't that make them more prone to snapping? or is the core of the string strong enough on its own?

I cant see why anyone would do that! We have the action adjustment screws for that. .

I believe those are tapered strings. They are purposely manufactured that way.

Unwinding wouldnt mean either tapered or buying store bought strings to me.

Yes. Indeed. Unwinding strings would be bad.

My understanding is that it isn't for lower action, but it is supposed to improve attack. Maybe sustain, too. Anyone else got insight on this?

The nearer the string's fulcrum point is at the bridge to the center of the string the more articulate it sounds.

The core is more than stable enough in most cases to have it withstand it alone as a witness point at the saddle - BUT - unwinding a string to get it there can loosen up all winds on the string and will kill it.
