upside-down players needs xxxlong strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
hi folks--
I'm a lefty who has always played guitar and bass upside-down. That is, I take a right-handed guitar (strung regularly) and flip it over to play.

But now I bought a lefty P-bass copy and need to restring it backwards. But I've found that even the LONG scale E string won't make it to the furthest tuning peg.

Any clues on how to found super-long strings, probably 4 inches longer than the LONG ones? I'm of the understanding that acoustic bass strings won't do the trick due to volume loss, etc.

Otherwise, I'll have to go back to looking goofy with an upside-down righty bass. My dreams will be dashed.

Thanks for any suggestions on where to look.

These are Super Long Chromes that I use on the bottom 4 of my 8-string. It might be an option.

The E measures 37.5 inches from ball-end to the beginning of the silk wrap. A bit over 38 inches ends the flat-wound's outer-wrap.

Thanks for that tip. I don't think that's long enough. Here's my situation:

Because the squier p-bass has a very long headstock the distance from the saddle to the E tuning peg is 42 inches (when strung as I need them, upside-down)! That's wicked long, I know.

And then the distance from saddle to A tuning peg is 40.5 inches; distance from saddle to D tuning peg is 38.5 inches; distance from saddle to G tuning peg is 36.5 inches.
Saddle to nut is still 34 inches.

The question is, will I need to have custom made strings for all 4? Just the E? Any recommendations?

Thanks so MUCH!

You might want to try my strings - despite varying taper locations, all of them wind out to accommodate my Quakes (39.5" scale length).

I offer one flavor and you will likely not be able to thread through the body, so it may not be your solution. It sounds like mine may work for you, though.

I do the same thing but haven't run into this problem yet. Lately, I primarily use ProSteels and recently got a set of Circle K strings. Both E's reached fine on my G&L L2000.

You could try a bass with a 2 on a side headstock - most anything other than a Fender in fact :-)

Why not go 2 on a side with the Fender headstock, then fill in the old holes and paint the head to match the body?

It'd look neato. Like an old Teisco.
