Using the C string for a G string

Does anyone play like this? Using a C string in place of the G string and use the G as a D string and so forth?

Sounds to me like you'd need to have the nut slotted properly and you'd get a lot of potential fret buzz.

You could accomplish the same thing by switching to an extra-light string gauge, that way you wouldn't have to throw out your E string!

I have indeed experimented with such a thing. The sound is less "punchy", but bends are much easier.

You mean tuning the bass ADGC, like the top 4 strings of a 6-string? If so, that's generally called tenor-bass tuning, and there are a handfull of people who do it.

If you mean taking a C string and tuning it down to G, just using it like a really light gauge string, then I don't know many people who do that. On my fretless Kinal Acoustic I use an ADGC set and tune it down to standard EADG. Works great for me
