Using flats on a ABG?

Anyone do this? I want to get more of a "thumpier" sound out of my acoustic bass with out all the screech sounding of acoustic roundwound strings.

I do. I have a Guild B4E ABG with flats on it. I love it. The strings are for an electric though and as such seem to have a higher tension. I made a small adjustment to my truss-rod and was off jammin. Been using them for nearly three years and no probs yet. BIG thmpy booty, sits great in recorded and live mix.

I was advised to go with LaBella black nylon-tape wounds. They work very well, and aren't too expensive.

I use an Epiphone El Capitan 5 string fretless. I have tried D'Addario chromes, LaBella nylon tape wounds and Rotosound TruBass. I like the TruBass a lot more than the other two because I'm trying to approximate the sound of a DB and the chromes were too "zingy" and also rather uneven in stiffness, the LaBellas were a lot better, but the B was rather floppy and the D and G string were much bighter than the rest. For me the TruBass are farily consitent in tone and stiffness, feel great and have the closest sound to a DB of the three with the EQ flat.

Hope it helps

a singer songwriter friend of mine is wanting me to play bass with him on the side so this is what i'm needing it for.
