| There is no industry standard for taper length according to SIT or Elixir whom I have contacted. Some TW's have a exposed core that taper abruptly, and others gradually taper through decreasing graduated windings (like the winding end of the string). I can tell you that Elixir TW's are 1 1/2" from the ball to the end of the taper (where it reaches full diameter) through graduating windings - not exposed core, and SIT TW's are the same other than a 2 7/8" distance.
I used a TW for E once, and liked it, but it's cheaper just to buy a standard 4-string set plus a TW B string than singles, and I didn't want a full TW set - just E/B or B only.
Email the string manufacturers you like, and ask about their taper length, and if it's an exposed core or wound. Go from there.
