Varying bass string types/guages?

Sign in to disble this ad
just wondering if anyone else does this, as i'm thinking about it. right now i'm using "medium" guage Fender Flats, and i'm thinking about replacing the D and G with "light" rounds from a set i have laying around. i enjoy the smooth warm lows of the Flats, but i use alot of runs and higher note "blips" in my playing, and i think using rounds on the higher strings would really brighten up my playing.

Does anyone else do this?

Nope, but don't let that stop you from experimenting.

I personally wouldn't do it, 'cause there would likely be major issues with string-to-string balance. But by all means, give it a whirl and see how it works for you...

I've heard the occasional story of someone mixing flats and rounds, but I also have no personal experience with doing this. Give it a try - it doesn't cost much and it's completely reversible if you don't like it.

Another thought: try some "less bright" roundwounds, like Fender pure nickel or (my favorite) DR Sunbeams.

Let us know how it works out... I know a few DB players mix string types (Charlie Haden said in an interview it was essential to his sound on the upright)
They like the change in "timber" from string to string..
