If you're looking for zing, the Phosphores should do it, although I haven't tried them on a
VB. I got rid of them for the same reason, too much zing, not enough boom.
I used the D'Addarios for a while but I've got the Elixer Acoustic Bass set on my MK Club Custom. I was real pleased with them at first...especially the consistent feel and sound. The E has since died a little though...wish they were cheaper.
I've only tried these two types though.
