I am interested in watching listening to live videos where flat wound strings rule and is the sound that everyone brags about.
I would prefer videos in local and not huge venues such as bars. Classic rock style band or any music really where the bass sounds like a star with flats.
I have read so many threads about people loving that tone and I just want some examples.
I wasnt sure if this was best for the strings forum or the basses forum. so mods feel free to move it.

| | | To my ears, and IMHO, this video has THE flat sound, nice playing on top of that. The bass is the Fender Tony Franklin signature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RFzug52Dbg EDIT: For flats on a fretted bass, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden takes the cake IMHO.

I guess it would like to hear the live band mix and how the flats sit in the mix with that perfect tone that isn't muddy but is deep and rich sounding with fundamental lows.

Meaning I expect to see *very few*.

| | | | But it could also be argued that among the reasons there's not much footage of flats being played in a live mix is because they are not as popular anymore. Not because they do not sound "great," which in the end boils down to personal preference.
Flatwounds are great, and roundwounds too. The best solution, IMHO, is to have basses stringed with one or the other. I know that I am using roundwounds at the moment because my other bass also had flats. If I had to choose one, it would be flats, noting that the roundwound set I am using is outstanding, but the flatwound sound is essential to me (probably not to many others, of course!) |

Guy's fingers also look to be about an inch longer than mine.

Nice flats with pick sound too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiKwl-3vJV8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6cl83CW_vU
The first one is badly mixed and distorts somewhat, but you can hear the bass really well lol.
The second one has a great live tone overall. Great bass tone too, you can really hear the flats here.
But honestly... not that easy, especially to find videos of current bands. Not really en vogue anymore, eh.
