Waisted trip to the "Big City"

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I decided to go to Champaign Illinois to get some Flat wounds since I live in a rather small town will not much of a music store and after going three places and the third call all the other shops in town for me, not one shop had a set of flats for a 5 string and the only 4 string set was not what I wanted if it was a 5 string set.
Looks like I will be ordering some. Now to make that final decision on which ones.
I am down to 3, I am going from GHS Boomers Standard
Long Scale Mediums. 045-065-085-105-130. I know this because there is an extra set in the case, now being "standard long scale" does that mean I need a "long scale" set?
Here is what I am down to:

1st choice- TI Flatwounds due to what people have said about the light tention and woody upright sound. The price is high, but may be worth it.

2nd choice- DR Flatwounds, low tention again with woody sound.

3rd choice- GHS Flatwounds, low tention maybe not much setup change from Boomers I have now.

What you all think?

Setup not realy a problem as I accualy like messing around with mechanicle things and knowing how to do things myself.

Going on a ESP B-205 with active. Whats the best was to go for blues/christian praise?

Thanks
Dano

I think I just had a seizure looking at that font. How about Arial?

Not familiar with any of the noted strings, but would like to point out you'll probably get more response with a simpler font/color scheme.

TI flats are nice. Weigh the cost against how long they last and they're really not expensive. I really prefer nickel (or even steel) rounds for P&W music, but the TI flats will do quite nicely for blues and they will work for the P&W stuff too.

edit: also, note, you will get flamed on these forums for use of non-standard font. If ya like the big red font, go for it, but the typical font is a lot easier to read. And you will get more serious responses.

When you said WAISTED, I thought you were going to tell about wrapping the strings around your midsection...

I've never seen a good selection of 5 string flats in person. As far as I can tell, there's not a shop here in the Triangle area (pop. 1 million) that has more than Chromes in the 5 string set. This is an area of commerce where the internet has been a boon.

TI Flats are unique. Not really a classic, thumpy flat sound. You will love them and want to put them on every bass you ever own, or hate them.

Of the three sets you mention, the GHS Precision set is the most classic flat. And the least expensive.

Sorry about the font...

Maybe I should just stay with the Boomers since 80% of what I will be playing is P&W.

Thanks for the input.

P&W ?

After thought, assuming 'praise and worship'... might not want to assume everyone with advice to give understands all the shortening of words you may use.

I LOVE the TI jazz flats. I play in a motown/ party band, with a children's singer (many varied styles on that gig), and praise and worship, no one complains about the sound of my strings. In fact, I still roll off some high end, and they are not muddy or thumpy at all. I find them very smooth and easy to play. I have not tried the DR strings, but I hope I have no string changes for about another 8 years or more (about 6 months into the set I have now). Anyway, despite the cost, I very very highly recommend the TI flats. If you go to www.myspace.com/chrisnunezmusic and listen to the song Gasoline Dream, that was recorded with my warmoth p/j bass strung with TI flats, tone rolled all the way off, p pickup only. I traded that bass for a MM stingray, which is now strung with that set of strings, sounds awesome to me. Unfortunately though, I can't see the point in string reviews as far as sound, because that is going to depend so much on the player, the instrument, etc., plus one person's golden set is another's trash, so you may need to do some research. The good news is that with flats, people will buy your used strings because they get better with age, so you can get some of your money back if you decide they're not for you. In fact, the set in question on my bass was bought used on this board.

A spell checker wouldn't hurt either.

Yeah, I know... I'm a dickhead.

Great tune....

That is the type of sound I am hoping to get as I learn. Clean, solid, woody, without that overpowring ring that some players have.

Thanks for the info.

Dick head or not you are right about the spell checker as my spelling or lack of overwelming concern about it is not good.

Most of my posts come from my blackberry on the road and the spell checker on this sytem does not want to load into my phone much less the laptop. Says it is already loaded but every time I try and use it it tells me I have to load it.

With that said, while I do thanks eveyone for the assistance that has and will be offered if my bad spelling is burning you up I sujest when you see Dano59 that you pass the post on buy.

So lets see.....

I fixed the font
I fixed the color
I covered the spelling

God Bless
Dano
