Warmest Flatwound?

Sign in to disble this ad
Now, for the other end of the spectrum, is there any particular flatwound string that has a significant noticeable difference in warmth than any of the rest?

I find GHS Precision flats to be about as warm as a flat gets. I like them alot.

Honestly, TI jazz rounds blow any flat I've played out of the water for warmth...and I was a flat guy before those...mostly chromes and sometimes some tapes. The winding is smaller than a regular round wound so it feels somewhere between a flat, ground, and a round.

Warmth is pretty subjective. Out of the box, DR flats are very bottom heavy. LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats have a very warm sound, but it's a very complex mid-heavy sound. Very expressive strings, and similar to a nice pizzicato upright bass string.

Of the four types I've tried, GHS Precision flats, no question, with Ernie Ball a distant second.

Pyramid flats are warmer than even the GHS Precision Flats.

La Bella and GHS, both. If you want to save yourself some money, take the GHS lol (you can get two sets of GHS for one set of La Bella over here).

I ordered some pyramid gold flats, they better be worth the 72 buck.

Macca, Lesh, and Casady cant be wrong. Right?

The 2 lighter gauges feel "normal". The thick gauge has a lot of tension to me.

GHS Flats light gauge are my favorite strings. They have somewhat low tension, and a warm tone. But if you're hard with them, they can have a beautiful aggressive growly tone. They kinda beg to be spanked a little bit .

So the OP is getting a handful of suggestions that narrow down the field. This seems like the time to try them all out (and report back on TB). Warmth is by nature subjective. I've tried lots of them and keep coming back to the musicality of the Labella DTB's. Have fun and try them all!

I have to try the GHS flats. I've heard the GHS strings, on another guys bass (old Kramer aluminum neck bass with EMG P pickup), and they sounded wonderful. Seriously wonderful. Warm is a GREAT way to describe what I heard.

Meanwhile, I'll be completely happy with my LaBella 760FL's.
