Webstrings flatwound, tension?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking into a set of these after hearing some good things about them. Does anyone know how these rank in the tension department? I'm looking for something that sounds and feels like Fender flats, only deader and with a little less tension.

Also, anyone have any experiences between the gauges of these flats? I'm leaning towards the heavy 50-110 but balance between the strings and consistency is also an issue. If there's more balance between the medium 45-105 sets, i'd probably be more apt to try those out. Any input is welcome!

I've got 9050ML's on my P and Webstrings mediums on my T-40. Looser and deader is a good description of the Webstrings. In fact, they're a bit too loose feeling for me and I'm probably going to change them over to Fenders soon. I haven't tried many different types of strings but I really like how I can dig in a bit on the Fenders and they'll push right back. I feel I can get a wider variety of sounds by having this option.

As for the sound, the Webstrings work ok. They've got a dead, thuddy thump to them right from the start. It's kind of hard for me to describe because I just seem to prefer the Fenders overall feel and sound. I tried the Webstrings because of the price and for a dead thump I guess they're ok. Not really a glowing review but I'm not especially enamored with them.

If you want looser strings lots of people recommend Chromes although I understand them to be a bit brighter. I've read that LaBellas will give you lower tension and less brightness but they're pricey. I suppose if you're looking for low cost, low tension and dead thumpy these might be right up your alley. They're just not right for me.

Thanks for the input Rugaar. I've got the Fender's on my jazz bass and sb-2 now, and they sound good but the tension is a bit much at times. I'm looking for something more along the lines of the Dean Markley flatwounds, but w/out the price tag. I've tried the chromes, labellas and roto's and fell between fenders and dean markleys and now am settling on the dean markleys. However, proper funding for this is not in place, I may just save up for a set of the DM's than go the cheaper route.
