Webstrings - quick review

Sign in to disble this ad
I was looking for some new strings to try and I decided to give Webstrings a try since I've heard good things about them on this site. I bought a 4 string set of the Detroit Bass nickel rounds 50-110 and a 5 string set 45-130.

I only strung the 4 string set tonight, on my SX fretless. I found it a little odd that not only did they package the strings two to a sleeve, but not even the consecutive string. One paper sleeve had strings 1 and 3 (G and A) and the other had 2 and 4 (D and E). The sleeves are labeled that way so it wasn't some mix up. I also ended up with two D strings somehow, though it is an extra and I'm not missing any others. Weird.

I know Webstrings gets their strings from a US manufacturer. I'd heard speculation that it was Ernie Ball and I think that might be right. These play and sound exactly like them, for a bit less money.

A good buy for the money I think. I'll check out that 5 string set when I get home from work tomorrow and see how that B string feels.

I believe they are D'Aquistos. I am pretty sure that's who makes Ernie Ball's strings for them too.

I just got gone putting the 5 string set on. I'd be very surprised if I found out these aren't Ernie Ball's/D'Aquistos. They feel and sound exactly the same. I like EB strings so these are a great cheap way of getting their feel and sound. I'm very happy with these. Time to break them in.

Definitely gonna try these. Thanks for the review!

Hopefully their acoustic guitar strings are good too... 'cause I think I'll order a set as well.

My acoustic guitarist swears by them and imports them by the box.

They sound ok but might need more frequent changes, from what i heard his B-string breaks slightly more frequently than normal.

Somebody did/does.

Maybe by now they have their own machines set up to their specs, but when Ball first started selling strings, he went to an outside source to manufacture them.

This is what I was told/have read.

I'd like to know for sure, since they say they are made in the Ernie Ball factory in Coachella Valley in the desert. Anybody know for sure if EB outsources strings?

Can't use Webstrings on the string through body option of Fenders. They fall short.

I got a light set (.40-.95) for my Rickenbacker 4001 and they are great. The packaging definitely confused me though. I put the A string on the E string slot and cut the string way shorter than I was supposed to. Luckily I left a little extra on so it still tunes to pitch and stays there. Bad mistake to make though. I would definitely recommend taking all the strings out of the package first I recommend these strings, they sound great. I've been playing them in my school's jazz band, adn there is plenty of punch and low end, even from these light gauge strings.

So, who has tried Webstrings lately and compared them to other strings? For example, I really like DR Nickel-Plated Lo Riders, and Dunlop Nickels seem good too. I have Skjold strings on my 5-string.

How do the Webstrings sound compared to other strings you've tried?

How long do Webstrings last compared to other strings?

I tried a set of Webstrings several years ago, but I thought I recalled the windings feeling somewhat uneven and the feel being a bit harsh under my fingers. I assume I tried the Nickels, but I'm not sure.

Wow, I just got back from my mailbox where I had a new package of Webstrings waiting and then this thread pops up again.

There may be better strings out there, but I like having these on hand for the price. Like I said in the OP, I really think these are rebranded Ernie Balls, which became a sort of "standard" string for me for some reason (perhaps because it's mostly what the smaller shops here sell).

I'm still using the same set as when I started this thread and I must say I like how these strings settle. A decent bit of mellow tone with enough high end zing for me. The windings on my sets seem even and no more harsh than other nickel strings.

I've used Webstrings in the past almost exclusively when I was a broke college student scraping by. Personally I found that Webstrings seemed to be Ernie Ball seconds. Not a great string, not a bad string, but definitely cheap.

anyone using these on 35" scale basses. i see the nickel RW are noted on the website to be for 34" scale bass but nothing noted for the SS round wounds as to whether they will fit 35" scale. i emailed webstrings but have no response so far.

No. They make their own strings.

Ask if they outsource on the EB forums, and prepare to be flamed by Sterling Ball.

Ya know, $12.99 per set and free shipping for orders over $50 is great, but I'm still hesitant to try these strings again. I just need to know the strings would sound and feel good because I can't afford for them NOT to sound and feel good in live situations.

Heck, the twin packs of D'Addarios are also a good deal if not slightly more costly, but at least I know the quality is still good and they can get the job done.

Anybody happen to prefer Webstrings over D'Addario or some other well known brands?

Zon strings do the same. Putting 2 strings per packages. E and D in one and A and G in the other.
