Webstrings SS Flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Just ordered these for my Fender Jazz. I never tried Flats before, but for 20 bucks USD, not bad price to give it a try. My band has two guitars so the roundwounds were kinda getting a little growly in the mix (on a jazz) with the guitars and I have to keep turning up.

I heard some mixed reviews on these strings, some love em, some say they die compared to other strings.

They're cool strings, though I think it is accurate to say they die a little quicker. Although with flats, that could be good or bad! I like my TI flats better, but I did like the webstrings in a different way.

I got a set on my P bass and like 'em. But they are the only flats I've played.

Update: Really Dig em. Put them on and my bass sounded great right away. A couple EQ tweaks on my head and yeah..these strings are great for 20 bucks! For my first exp with flatwounds, you can say I'm a convert. The low tension is perfect for my jazz bass. Maybe someday I'll try out the TI's, but for now the Detroit Flats are sweet.

Glad you like 'em. I'm getting ready to put 'em on my '51 P bass reissue.

I just installed a set of these last night on my Spectorcore.

Have not used flats on a bass before this - quite a difference in feel and sound. Very nice with the bridge piezo; I am surprised that I like the sound with a lot of treble rolled off.

After I get a chance to play some more, I'll add some better feedback...

Be sure to tell us if they fit.

*WHY*
don't string companies tell us the ball-to-silk/step length of their flipping strings???

I just bought three sets of strings, Fenders and D'Addarios, that are all about 1/8" too short to make the nut on any of the basses for which I bought them.

I dug out some strings out of the studio that just made it by 1/16".

That's freaking ridiculous.

When I first started using webstrings, I used the rounds on my 35" scale 5 string, and the B wrap was just a little short of the nut. I emailed them, and they actually called me within a few hours, asked exactly how long it needed to be, then searched through their strings to find that length (I guess it varies a little). They then sent me two that worked (I had only purchased one set). If I didn't switch to TI flats I would still be using webstrings- price is right and support is great.

Maybe that's why manufacturers don't supply the spec, but jeeze, couldn't they give us an approximation?

You can see what we're up against. This constantly missing it or making it by less than a 1/4" is really too much suspense for me.
