hi i'm james i'm an amateur bassist who is still borrowing his friend's... squire bass. will get new bass darn soon.

Anyways, today I went to guitar center and bought a set of the thickest guitar strings available, ghs boomers heavy, which are gauges 50, 70, 90 and 115. I put them on the crap bass, and wow! even it sounds pretty good. My fingers are bruised, my amp is sweating, and I was in love with heavy strings. How do you guys feel about heavy strings? Is this just a phase I will soon pass, or will I have a lifetime devotion to heavy strings? Are there any 4-string sets heavier than these?

I went through a phase of using that guage on my 5 string a few years back - hartke do a wicked set in this guage. They are really cheap and make your fingers black but this is good for helping your fingers to slide on the strings. I also used Ernie Ball Power slinkies which are 50, 70, 85, 105, 135 but they don't seem to last very long with me.

I discovered that my bass was pish (scottish dialect for rubbish) and immediately tossed it in the garbage. Okay it was my 5 string stingray and I actually sold it.

I have since gone back to my regular 30,45,65,85,105,130 guage for my 4,5 & 6 string basses

I play a 145 low B on some of my instruments (others I use a 135). Can't scare me with fat strings...

I like my 4 string basses tuned B E A D so I also
use a 145 for the Low B.

Real important on 34" scale basses... No Wobble...
