I opened up a bass case for the first time in about a week, to find that somehow the E-String broke when it wasn't even being played.

Thats pretty odd... how does a string break like that? It broke around the 7th fret.

Oh by the way, these were GHS Precision Flats...

How old were the strings?

Hmmmmm.......Strange. I have used them off and on for over 15 years and have never had them do that, nor have ever heard anyone else who had that problem before.
Contact GHS and tell them; I think they need to know.

GHS has excellent customer service! I had once gotten a set where all the strings were sticky and they sent me a whole new set free of charge.

I've broken one string in 5 years, and I didn't even break it myself (guitarist of my band and I switched for a song; he's an aggressive slapper). You rarely hear about strings breaking anywhere but the machine, nut, or saddle in the first place - how odd. Was something in the case pushing down or up on it, by chance?

Only thing I keep in my case is a 6 inch patch cord, socks, and a tuner and they all fit in that tiny compartment. I thought maybe I really downtuned and forgot. Then I noticed all the windings stretched out where the 7th fret would be if it was still intact. Its a bummer. I have 3 basses in my house at the moment, and they all have broken strings.

On an unrelated note this was a 2008 Am. Standard Precision bass. The neck didn't budge the entire time and is still completely playable. How's that for stability?
