Put a set of D'Addario Chromes on the Fender Jazz tonight and then spent the better part of 3 hours working it out. Much different feel than the Blue Steels (which I love), and I thought, "what the heck, drop the action and see what you get."
I got a lot. I actually had to raise the action, as my fingers were hopping a foot or so off the strings. I just got some Blue Steels for the Yamaha, so I am set for rounds and flats for awhile, and after I upgrade the Jazz' neck pickup I should have two basses that will provide me with all the tonal range I need around these parts.
I did a lot of reading in this forum prior to buying these, and I'm glad I did, because the "reviews" on the MF and GC websites were downright laughable. "No more blisters for me!" was my favorite.
The feel these have is definitely different, and if I don't watch my technique, I get hung up on certain licks and runs, but if I do watch my technique and am careful, I can do a lot of cool stuff with these strings that I cannot do with my rounds, and what they do for the jazz pickup combination is really nice, too.
I'm considering an Antiquity neck pickup combined with my SPJ-3b Quarter Pounder, so these warmer strings should be nice and purringly fat when it's all said and done.
Thanks for the advice, insight and information I got on here. |
