What are the Best Rounds, If You're Not Going to Change Them?

Sign in to disble this ad
In your opinion, what are the best rounds after they have lost their zing? Are there any rounds you have tried that would have been fine basically forever?

Some rounds, it seems, go dead and they are awful. Some just mellow and stay there forever.

What's your experience?

I was just mentioning this in another thread but I'll repeat it here. The stainless steel roundwounds that I have found to keep that bright zingy tone the longest is Dean Markley Blue Steels. The second best I've found are DR Hi-Beams.

I have some dead D'Addario XL nickel roundwounds on my main player right now, and even though they are dirty and have lost a little something - they still don't sound bad at all.

I think DR Lo-Riders still have a fantastic tone after they lose that "zing." That's the main reason I still use them. If I do need a little more punch, I can dig in a little and they still sound good.

I used to use the S.S. DR Lo Riders on a Fender Jazz a couple of years back and yes they did sound good as they aged a bit. They got kinda warm but still sounded good if you slapped them.

Hi beams. I don't even like them while they are super-zingy. I like them after a week.

Very Subjective, but to me its Ernie Ball Super Slinky.

I have recently moved to D'addario Chrome flats and digging them

Another vote for DR Hi-Beams. I've had a set on my Ken Lawrence for about 2 years now, and don't plan on changing them anytime soon

I think the coated D'addarios aren't too zingy, and mellow and stay there for a while.

Elixers really do last if you can get over the initial sticker shock. They start off just a bit less zingy but stay there for a long long time.

DR Black Beauties are real long lived and to my ear are livelier than Elixir's. My fav round bar none is the Thomastic Super Alloy though. Best over all tone of any strings I've tried - and I've tried a bunch. To my ear - they have more body and less zing out of the box, They sound a lot like a broken in Boomer or Rotosound Swingbass and they stay that way a long time. There is a very, very short wear in period. Like 30 mnutes and then they settle into what they're going to be for a long time.

I get about a year out of them on my main round wound player. I tend to use TI Jazz Flats on my other main player. I always take 2 basses, 1 with rounds, 1 with flats.

Hi Beams. They sound better to me when they are broken in, more rich. Zing is over rated!

Not as "zingy" as rotos but sound great for a long time--LOTS cheaper---I just clean them with a little bit of ZIPPO lighter fluid on the corner of a wash-cloth every couple of days..

Fender "Super Bass" nickelplated stainless steel. One of the main reasons they are my favorite string.

I'm a big fan of dead EB Slinkies. When new, they're kinda zingy and such and that's cool, but I love their tone once they've died down a bit. Nice, round punchy thump.

They're not as popular as some of the strings being mentioned here but I've had La Bella Deep Talkin' Rounds on my P bass for about 3 months now. They're nice strings, lots of definition, they're starting to mature and mellow out now.

Very nice strings, I got them for $20, they'll deffinately last me until the end of the summer, who knows mabey even longer!
