Thinner gauges tend to flop around easier which could make it more difficult to play fast. Overall string gauge isn't gonna have a huge affect on how fast you can play though. For me just working with a metronome and slowly building up my speed had the biggest difference. Lighter gauges are easier when doing bends, so I guess there is a chance it could help you play faster if you use a lot of bends. Hope this helps.

Amadeus...

Respectfully... I'll disagree.
--------

Fast...
Start with a good solid bass fast bass (think sleek and rock solid are best) and one heck of a killer setup.... fast is not the same setup as thumpy lumpy

THEN it's a balanced set of taper core (or exposed core) light stainless strings with high enough tension to not to buzz out or flop around.

My opinion is that high end graphite basses seem to be fastest as many can be played with the left hand only and will sustain for days.

There are some excellent Mark King short demonstration videos on Youtube showing how he can play with only his left hand... this abilty just doubled your speed.

I don't know about string gauge related to playing fast. However, I do feel that smooth strings like flats are easier to move your hand quicker up and down the fret board. I have GHS Pressure Wound strings on my Jazz bass and it always seems easier to play on than my basses with round wound strings.

i use dr hi beam mediums and they are easier to push down than alot of other strings imo. but strings alone wont help it also has alot to do with your neck and the control you have over your fingers.
