I play only orchestra bass so that influences my string choice. That said, I have found Pirastro Flexicors (not Original Flexicors) to repond well, be easy to play and have a nice arco tone. The Original Flexicors are a bit less mellow on tone but are OK. Have used Helicore Arcos and while A and E are powerful and have good tone the D and, especially G, tend to be scratchy when played open. Did ndot like G much at all. Tried Thomastik Spirocore Medium Orchestra and was totally disappointed. Hard brash tone. Couldn't believe these are represented as an orchetra string.

I'm a fan of DR. Just a solid string with a sweet sound.

I'm now using DR Lo-riders in nickel.

I have used several models of DRs and D'Addarios. Fodera Vic Wooten Signatures have worked best for me.

For years I only used D'Addario XL 160 and 165's depending on the bass. But recently on the advise of the recording engineer that we're working with I tried a set of Ernie Ball strings and they're pretty good too. I think they may have a little more bite to them and last a little longer than the D'Addarios - but in all honesty, if i we're blindfolded I probably could not tell the difference so since I can get the 2 pack of D'addarios for less $$$ I'll probably stick with them.

My P-bass and my fretless Jazz have TI Jazz Flats. I love those strings.

If we're talking about rounds, I'd have to say DR.

i normally used rotosounds for years and years and do really like them, i switched because of reading so many positive things about the DR's...i now have been using Hi-Beams. I have sets of Marcus sig's and Fat Beams, to try next.

Whatever sounds the best, and is the most inexspensive for each instrument. Strings by themselves do not have a sound. The instrument has the final say. Cheap strings may sound good on a high dollar bass, and vis versa. I use Ernie balls for Musicman, DR's for Modulus and D'adarrio for Fender.

I just recently tried DR Lo-Riders (Stainless) for the first time. I had been using Ernie Ball Reg Slinkys or D'addario XLs prior to that and had also tried GHS and Rotosound Swing Bass. I could not believe how superior the DRs sounded, so aggressive and bright w/o being zingy and they don't chew up my fingers. I'll never use anything else.

Wow, and to think all those string manufacturers are just wasting their time with research and development. Might as well just throw some shoelaces on that thing, it'll sound the same...

Did I just misunderstand your comment? I don't know what strings or hearing aid for that matter that you use, but both could use some changing. Why do you think people change strings anywhere from between every show to every few weeks?

The string material, the thickness of wire, the structural design, the number and size of the windings, the overall gauge, the stressing or de-stressing, even the silk to a very small part have to do with the tone that comes out of the string.

Lets not start talking about the bridge, the nut, the wood, shape, design, etc. of the bass...

I've used Fender, Rotosounds and D'Addarios and the latter is my favorite. The XL 2 packs are very affordable and I love the tone! Changed the strings on my two basses for the price of one.
