What is different about different strings?

What kind of sound dif. is there between high and low gauge strings? what about flat wounds and nickel strings and all that such? I play a Modulus Flea 4 and a Stingray, can anybody recommend some good strings to buy for each of those? I mostly play with fingers, but i'm beggining to use a pick a lot. I slap some too.

You could definitely check out one article in Bass Player where they test out hundreds of different strings and report on their differences.
