What do you do with a string that's dead right out of the package?

I just strung up my Lakland with a set of LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels yesterday. When I string up a bass, I always start with the low string. As I was putting the E string on, I could tell that it was lifeless. Since this was my first set of Hard Rockin' Steels, I figured that this might have been typical. But I put the other strings on, and they were great. I know some people prefer the sound of dead strings, but I love the sustain and zing of new strings. Needless to say, I was disappointed that only 3 of the strings I just put on sounded this way.

So what do you do when you get a dead string right out of the package? Toss the set? Try to return it? Contact the manufacturer?

I've never had a brand new dead string before, I'm not sure how to handle it.

In my experience, if you contact the manufacturer, they'll send you a fresh pack. It's worth a shot, even if it is a bit inconvenient.

You may have just twisted the string a bit when you installed it. Try taking it off and reinstalling. If that doesn't work - see the previous post.....

I leave it on until the others sound just as dead...then gig them for 5 years or so!

I've occasionally gotten a bad string. It happens. As said above contact the manufacturer and they'll make it right.
